Comparison and Contrast of “Bartleby, the Scrivener” and “Look on the Bright Side.”

Write a comparison and contrast essay on Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener” and Dagoberto Gilb’s “Look on the Bright Side.”

Your paper should have a thesis and it should argue a specific claim, which you will back with close reading of the text.

Your paper must cite from the text at least six times (though you may cite the text more than 6 times), and it must be formatted in MLA style (page numbers only). You may not use any outside sources – Internet or otherwise – in your essay.

The substance of your essay should consist of your claim and your reading of the story or stories. You do NOT need to include a Works Cited page because all your sources are from the anthology.

1. Write an essay comparing and contrasting Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener” and Dagoberto Gilb’s “Look on the Bright Side.”

  • As part of your analysis, consider the similarities and differences between the character Bartleby and the narrator of “Look on the Bright Side.” In particular, analyze each character’s conduct as an act of freedom. In what ways, if any, do these characters have freedom? What are the possibilities and limits of their freedom?
